In the eyes of Klement, a lightly armored infantryman of the Border Guard, the back of a man appeared. That back grew wider and wider until it filled her vision. Then it became a wall, blocking her path.
A wall separating friend from foe appeared before her eyes like an illusion. She knew it was an optical illusion, a trick of the mind. Nevertheless, Klement perceived the wall.
The wall blocked the enemy, held firm, and became a fortress for her allies. Beyond the illusory fortress wall, she could see the enemy soldiers facing her allies kneeling, one by one. Did they see the same thing she did?
She didn’t know. Nor did she need to know. What was happening around her, even where she was right now, felt utterly unimportant.
The illusion faded, leaving only the man standing there, stock-still. Klement knew the nickname of the man who had suddenly appeared to block her path, to stand between friend and foe.
Demon Slayer.
She knew his name, too.
Enkrid.
And she knew his rank. Lord and general of the surrounding territories known as the Border Guard territory. He had spoken.
This is as far as you go.
Stop.
And with that, the battle ended. The sun was still in the sky, its rays illuminating the land. The light made everything around her appear so vividly clear.
