Today is the funeral of Penny’s junior. I didn’t know them personally, but they must have meant a lot to Miss Penny, so I attended.
“Following the will of the deceased, who devoted themselves to the teachings of the great Kagan during their life...”
But the eulogy didn’t really register. Maybe because it was religious? So I let the officiant’s words go in one ear and out the other for a while.
Instead, I thought about this place. This is the heart of the Imperial capital. A communal cemetery sits awkwardly among the now-sparse buildings.
I never imagined a communal cemetery would hold out this long on such expensive land. This place originally belonged to the Orthodox Church. Naturally, there was a temple next to the cemetery, but due to steadily worsening finances, they were eventually pushed out of the capital.
Even so, only this cemetery remained. Something about legal issues, they say. Thanks to that, it’s like a park has been preserved, which is good news for the mental health of capital citizens.
A few minutes later, all the proceedings ended and people began to disperse, and Penny approached me.
“Thanks for coming all the way here even though you must be busy.”
“Haha. Not at all.”
I scratched the back of my head awkwardly. It was because I didn’t know what to say. Penny made a greeting according to the traditional custom of the feline beastmen.
