Reincarnation Paradise

Chapter 7 Recommendation Letter

5 min read

The sun hung high in the sky, scorching the earth. The temperature reached thirty degrees, making the streets less crowded as people hurried to find shade.

Su Xiao walked under the blazing sun, and those nearby frowned, looking at him with some disdain. He had already dealt with the horse carriage, selling the horse for a low price.

Counting the bills in his hand, Su Xiao sighed. The currency was called Bailey. He got one hundred thousand Baileys from selling the horse. It sounded like a lot, but it was only worth about six thousand RMB in purchasing power.

Don’t overestimate that one hundred thousand Baileys; its value was far less than expected. Su Xiao found that buying a decent outfit would cost around eight thousand Baileys, and a good meal would set him back about nine hundred Baileys.

Glancing around and noticing the street was empty, Su Xiao slowly approached a house. It seemed like a random choice, but he had been observing this place for a while.

The house wasn’t particularly tidy, but there were no climbing plants on the walls, indicating that someone lived there and the facilities were intact. The fine layer of dust on the doorknob showed that the owner didn’t come back often, just occasionally, making it a perfect temporary shelter for him.

As for why he didn’t stay at an inn or tavern, it was because those places were full of all kinds of people and could easily lead to unnecessary trouble. He came to the pirate world to complete a mission, and with only sixty-eight hours left, he wouldn’t interact with too many people unless necessary.

Too many unknown people = trouble = unknown danger.

After confirming that no one was around, Su Xiao took out some simple lock-picking tools.

“Click, click, click.”

The door opened quietly. Su Xiao had learned lock-picking skills, and in this pirate world, such simple locks were child’s play for him.

Entering the house as if it were his own, he closed the door tightly behind him. Just as he expected, there was no one inside.

The house was over a hundred square meters, with a photo hanging on the wall. In it were a man, a woman, and a little girl, and from the woman’s sincere smile, it was clear they were a happy family.

Su Xiao quickly stripped off his clothes and rushed to the bathroom. Although he had impressive endurance, the stench on him was making him nauseous.

Water flowed down from above, washing away the dirt and smell. After changing into fresh clothes, Su Xiao felt completely refreshed.

Sitting on the sofa, a white treasure chest suddenly appeared in his hand.

“Do you want to open the treasure chest (white)?”

Choosing to open it, the chest quietly opened without any flashy lights or sounds.

“You have opened the treasure chest (white) and received the following items:

- 500,000 Baileys (can only be used in this world)

- Recommendation letter from Captain Rowan of the City Guard

- 100 Paradise Coins”

Receiving three items wasn’t a huge haul, but it was decent, considering this was just a white treasure chest. According to the item ranking of the ‘Reincarnation Paradise,’ white treasure chests were the lowest tier.

First, he stored the Baileys away since he didn’t need them right now. Then, he picked up the letter.

“Recommendation letter from Captain Rowan of the City Guard”

Quality: White.

Type: Trigger item.

Rating: 5. (The item rating is the same as equipment rating. 1-10, the higher the rating, the more valuable the item.)

Description: This is an impassioned recommendation letter. Captain Rowan abused his power to recommend a bully from Windmill Town as a guard member. With this letter, anyone can become a guard member, provided they are male and have sufficient Baileys.

After reading the letter’s description, Su Xiao smiled with delight. This was exactly what he wanted.

Since he couldn’t directly assassinate the king, at least he needed to meet him. The difficulty of missions in nightmare-level worlds couldn’t be solved with brute force.

Su Xiao stored all the items in his storage space and left the house.

First, he found a restaurant to have a hearty meal, then he started paying attention to the patrolling guards on the streets.

The so-called guard team was supposed to patrol the streets and deal with petty thieves. Although their power was limited, they were still an authority under the Goya Kingdom.

Following a few guards, Su Xiao quickly found the guard headquarters, which was a two-story office building. Two guards were lazily standing at the entrance.

Since he had the recommendation letter, he approached them directly.

“Stop! This is the guard headquarters; you can’t just barge in.”

A young guard spoke arrogantly, and upon seeing Su Xiao’s commoner attire, his tone became even more haughty.

“I’m a new guard…”

Su Xiao was about to say his name but quickly remembered that “Su Xiao” seemed out of place in the pirate world. Thinking fast, he continued, “I’m a new guard, Bai Ye.”

The young guard paused, looking Su Xiao up and down.

“Bai Ye? I don’t recall any new recruits. You’re not trying to sneak in…”

“Lis! Remember what the captain said? Don’t ask too many questions. Bai Ye, come with me.”

Another, slightly older guard shot a glare at the young one and then led Su Xiao into the guard headquarters behind him.

The young guard shot Su Xiao a resentful look, mumbling something under his breath.

Su Xiao ignored him, following the older guard to an office door.

“Ahem.”

The older guard straightened up and tidied his appearance, just about to knock when a voice came from inside.

The older guard lowered his hand and stood quietly to the side.

Knocking now would clearly disturb his superior’s peace.

The older guard smiled apologetically at Su Xiao, who was someone special under “higher-ups,” so the older guard didn’t want to offend him.

Su Xiao and the older guard stepped aside, and he took out a pack of cigarettes, offering one to the older guard.

“Snap.” The cigarette lit up, and they chatted casually in the hallway.

Though it was just a cigarette, it helped establish a bit of a shaky “friendship,” which was worth it.

“You’re really lucky to have the ‘higher-ups’ looking out for you. Don’t worry, someone’s already put in a good word for you to join the guard team. No problem at all. By the way, I’m Hank; we’re colleagues now.”

Su Xiao smiled modestly, but his eyes showed no change in emotion.

“I’m Bai Ye; please take care of me.”

As he spoke, Su Xiao slipped the remaining cigarette into Hank’s jacket pocket.

He was already considering whether the guard in front of him could be of use. He knew nothing about the capital, and this person could be very helpful.

Hank’s smile brightened a bit more.

After a while, Hank finally knocked on the office door.

“Who is it? Come in.”

A rough voice came from inside the office.
