The devil went blank on the spot. After half a year of running wild in Meyer City it was now a "worldly, well-informed" creature, and of course it knew what a magic staff was — but instinct told it that nothing good ever came of its master asking a question like that, so it tried to bluff its way through.
"Huh?"
Adam wiped off germs that weren't there, walked out of the cloning laboratory, and then repeated, dead serious, "Do you know what a magic staff is?"
"I..."
Adam carried on without waiting for it. "A magic staff is a spellcasting aid for Mages. A modern Mage's staff is made with alchemy knowledge, and is usually inscribed with enhancement magic formations — spiritual power amplification, mana amplification, ether communication, elemental convergence, and so on."
