The deal went smoothly. Between them, the three had gathered intel on four small towns, each holding anywhere from twenty to forty Magefoe apprentices, and not one of those towns had a full-fledged Magefoe in it.
Adam paid out twenty merit points. The three were glad to sell—that was exactly the plan they had entered the trial with.
Once the deal was done, Adam took his leave of the three and flew straight for the nearest city.
The devil's words had reminded him: the Magefoe could not possibly be stupid enough to leave their limited strength scattered out in the open, waiting for the trial apprentices to pick them off one by one. His two easy runs had been a matter of catching them flat-footed. If he didn't reap every merit point he could while they were still reeling, it would never come this easily again.
