Baoji Alley was completely cleared by the enforcers of Plum Blossom Ferry, who drove all the residents out and guarded both the alley’s entrance and exit.
Chen Ji leapt down from the courtyard wall and crouched in front of Wang Gui. “Who in the Military Intelligence Department came to buy information from you? Have I met them before?”
This matter had troubled Chen Ji for a long time.
Someone had been shadowing him from Luo City all the way to the capital, always hiding behind the scenes, watching his every move.
He had initially suspected the Secret Spy Division, later the Chen family’s main branch, but he never imagined the buyer was actually the Military Intelligence Department.
Wang Gui trembled like a leaf. “It was the valet driver by your side, sir. He came to buy information from me. The first time was in Luo City—I was just out buying charcoal for the winter at home when he found me and promised a hundred taels of silver.”
Chen Ji pondered. “It was always him?”
Wang Gui hurriedly added, “No, no, it started with him, but later others took over—someone carrying a shoulder pole… Then, when we got to the capital, it switched back to him.”
Chen Ji thought to himself that Wang Gui probably wasn’t lying.
