Hearing the captain’s orders, Alice immediately put on a serious look and thought hard — then even more seriously fixed her gaze on Duncan’s eyes. “What’s an escape pod?”
Duncan wasn’t surprised in the least.
If this doll ever stopped dropping the ball, that would be the day he’d start to panic.
Still, the current situation wasn’t too bad.
After several incidents he’d already confirmed that “Alice” might be fuzzy about many things, but the operational state of Navigator Three — that ancient, powerful spatial navigation system — was actually still online.
That system, in a manner of speaking, lived inside Alice’s “instincts.”
All he needed to do now was make Alice’s instinct realize that this mansion was missing a piece — at least in theory.
“That’s a missing part of this ‘Alice Manor,’ but you don’t have to understand exactly what it is,” Duncan said offhandedly when he saw the doll still staring at him with wide, curious eyes. “Do you remember what I told you about the Frost Queen?”
Alice thought for a moment. “Which thing? There are so many. I don’t remember them all…”
