The Death God is dead — yes, Duncan knew this, of course.
Not only the Death God, but the Storm Goddess, the Everburning Flame, the God of Wisdom, and even every ancient god or邪神 who had left their names in history or had never been recorded — every one of the ancient kings — they were all dead.
Long before, on the day of the Great Dissolution, at the instant when a thousand worlds were suddenly turned into this scorched, chaotic ash, all gods had fallen.
What remained were little more than their rotting corpses, the mere “inertia” of an old world.
But the moment the tall Gatekeeper said the words “the Death God is dead,” Duncan realized the man meant something different — not merely “the gods have died,” as he had understood, but a thing that had just occurred.
Not only Duncan; Agatha by his side reached the same conclusion almost immediately.
Her face shifted quickly from confusion to astonishment. “What happened?”
The tall Gatekeeper turned silently and resumed his stride toward the distant wasteland.
After a few steps his voice came, low and calm. “To buy time.”
…
The world was cooling.
