At the same time, at the other side where they were waiting for someone to create a diversion, the middle-aged Black man heard the commotion and looked up.
He first froze when he saw the mysterious pet racing toward the volcano mouth, then his face lit up with wild delight.
“Feral, I think our chance is coming!” he cried.
The middle-aged white man called McCarthy also looked up.
He was silent for a beat, then asked, “Why do I feel like I’ve seen that beast before?”
“That’s the pet the kid was holding just now,” McCarthy said with certainty.
He didn’t recognize the child’s pet earlier, so he had taken a longer look.
There was no way he had mistaken it.
“It looks like that when it grows up…” Feral was visibly surprised.
He was beginning to believe the child might not be ordinary—because the pet flying above radiated a single word: noble!
“How many others are there?” Feral asked.
“Three,” McCarthy answered.
“Have them all act now,” Feral said in a low voice.
McCarthy seemed a little embarrassed. “I don’t have their contact info.”
