Beast Taming: Starting From Zero

Chapter 50 Thoughts Upon Release

3 min read

I’d like to share a few words.

First, let me introduce myself: I am someone who battles procrastination and laziness every day.

The reason I started writing this story is that I recently developed a passion for reading about Beastmasters, but I found it hard to find a suitable story with a female lead. Most of the existing tales were too traditional, so I thought, why not write one myself?

Having grown up enjoying Pokémon from the Kanto region through to the Kalos region, I figured I could write some interesting bits about Beastmasters without a hitch...

I knew that stories aimed at women had fewer readers, but I decided to focus on a female protagonist. After all, I am a girl.

As a newcomer, I released the first two chapters right away with no backlog, purely on a whim. I was thrilled when I got a contract after writing over ten thousand words!

However, I soon realized that getting a contract didn’t make much difference in the number of readers. Since it was targeted at women, I had prepared myself for this, so I decided to just go with the flow and update every other day…

After a couple of weeks of this, the editor reached out to me and asked that I continue updating during a promotional period. I happily agreed, of course.

At first, I was puzzled about why my story was being promoted on QQ Reading instead of the platform I originally intended to use. However, I was so excited when I received my first monthly ticket and long review from a reader there, and I impulsively promised not to abandon the story.

Later on, I realized that as a lazy person, I might occasionally miss updates. I didn’t have any stockpiled chapters, as I always delayed writing until the last minute, then got distracted by my phone or my meals…

After some successful rounds of promotion, I found myself needing to keep updating still. But during that time, when I saw readers commenting and voting for me, it motivated me to write a bit more. So, I often managed to finish updates around six in the evening.

I considered taking breaks several times because my ideal rhythm was to update every two days… But because readers kept voting and commenting, I pushed through.

In the beginning, I would excitedly reply to every comment, but now I try to avoid it because I dread the pressure of being urged to update…

Even though the number of readers in the female category is not particularly high, for me, the transition from having no readers to daily comments feels quite rewarding.

As for releasing the story, just a couple of days ago, my editor informed me that the release was scheduled for May 23rd… It felt too soon, and I had yet to write a single backup chapter. When I release, I’ll need to update like crazy!

I pushed myself to work late into the night with coffee to get ahead for the next day…

Additionally, I’ve noticed that many new authors manage to write two chapters a day because they aim for attendance rewards. Unfortunately, since I had pauses during my contract period, I don’t qualify for those rewards despite any efforts.

I only found this out later. It’s a bit upsetting yet somehow a relief too, as it gives me an excuse not to write two chapters every day…

I know my readers might dwindle once the story is out, but that’s fine; I won’t abandon this story! If it does well, I might even stockpile chapters for some exciting updates. Even if it doesn't fare well, I plan to keep updating steadily, though perhaps at a slower pace, which is still a testament to a lazy person's dedication!

I wish I could thank the readers I see every day, but it feels a bit inappropriate to name them here. Maybe next time, I’ll express my gratitude properly.

Lastly, I’d like to answer a question that’s been on many minds: Is there a male lead? Personally, I enjoy reading deep and torturous love stories… If I wrote one, it would likely just become a melodrama that doesn’t fit the style of this book, so I doubt I’ll add a male lead.

In closing, I humbly ask for your support and initial subscriptions since the content being released on the 23rd was crafted during my coffee-fueled writing sessions…

Well, that’s it for my release thoughts. Perfect…
