Great King Shanying said it wasn't far, and Li Chengxi had thought it would be like popping over to a neighbor's house. But in reality, what Great King Shanying meant by "not far" was swinging through the treetops. For a monkey, it wasn't a long journey.
Walking step-by-step beneath the trees, however, took them more than an hour to finally reach the Pear Tree Forest. After another half an hour of walking, they at last saw a large, exposed rock wall. At the base of the rock wall were several large caves.
The entrances had been rubbed to a glossy patina, likely from animals constantly going in and out.
"Black Bear! Come on out! It is I, Great King Shanying, and I've brought a guest!"
As soon as they arrived, Great King Shanying started yelling at the top of his lungs toward the cave entrance. After he shouted twice, the darkness at the cave entrance seemed to squirm. Then, a group of chubby, roly-poly, charmingly clumsy black bears ran out of the cave.
"What are you hollering about! You mischievous monkey, you've come to disturb my peace again."
