“What do you mean, all of a sudden?”
“I grew curious.”
Enkrid still did not know the other’s identity. Yet he seemed to understand why he was here. It was something he sensed through instinct and perception.
The old man was sizing him up. And so Enkrid let him. There was nothing to hide, nothing to conceal.
There was nothing to gain by hiding or covering up. Everyone already knew. Krais, Jacksen, even Rem.
So Enkrid let him be, as he always did. The old man did not reek of blood, nor was he preparing to kill anyone. Was he supposed to drive him away?
The old man might become an enemy. This was neither prophecy nor foreknowledge. It was just a feeling.
Still, why not chase him out?
“When someone observes me, I can observe them in turn.”
Rua Garne had taught him that. As he watched, he sensed something. The old man also harbored something deep in his heart.
Something that resembled his own. And something that resembled Krang’s as well. A grand, seemingly impossible goal—some called it a dream.
Cynics might dismiss it as delusion, but if you were in the process of achieving it, whatever it was, it could hardly be dismissed as mere delusion.
“In my younger days, I wanted to change the world.”
