“Damn.”
Finn bit her lip and muttered. Only Enkrid and Torres, following behind her, barely caught that embarrassed whisper. The three of them had barely turned back for a short while when they ran into a group of soldiers.
Finn leaned her shoulder against the gentle bend of the tunnel wall and stuck only her head out to peek back. Then she tossed the torch in her hand backward. The light source flew with a whoosh and disappeared, leaving only the faint torchlight from the front.
That meant everything around them went dark. Torres lowered his body and stared forward. He didn’t have the eyes to see through the dark, but he had trained for moments like this.
He could more or less make out their numbers and weapons.
‘Shit, that’s a lot.’
A rough count said there were more than twenty of them. And their equipment wasn’t light either. Crossbows as standard, shortswords at the waist, and all armed in a similar fashion.
What did that say?
‘This is a trained unit.’
The fact they weren’t some ragtag mercenary band was already a problem. A trained group of soldiers was more dangerous than most packs of beasts or monsters. Especially in a narrow tunnel like this, against enemies with crossbows.
‘I’m going to die here.’
